This film was kind of shot on a whim. I was upstairs in our house on Lomond St when I got a call from Savannah asking me to come downstairs and choreograph something on the front porch with them. An hour later, Gabi showed up with their camera, and we shot the entire film in under three hours.

From there, Sav and I used the film to develop characters for a live performance. We used material from the first show we did, “House” and evolved it to fit the safety guidelines for COVID. The audience sat in their cars around the house, listening to the audio through their sound system while they looked through the window of this old two-story house; and a story of two lovers took flight. The show snakes through the house, making its way to the front porch and then the front lawn, where the climax of the show peaks with a lovers’ quarrel and a murder. The body was dragged into a car, and the audience watched them drive away.

This short film dives into themes of intimacy, relationships, classic American household tropes, and Southern queerness. The phrase 'Let's Play House' is something you might have heard as a child, where everyone would be assigned a role – mom, dad, baby, sister, brother, dog, cat... This project essentially represented an adult queer version of playing house with a friend, reminding me that some of the most brilliant ideas can emerge from spontaneous play. - Isa Newport
